Rev. Robert Amundsen is the pastor of the Evarts
Congregational UMC and Wallins UMC in the
Red Bird Missionary Conference.
He was born in Watervliet, Michigan and
raised in Mountain City, Tennessee but has also
lived in California and Missouri. He is originally
from the Holston Conference. Robert graduated
from high school in 1988 and is a 1992 & 1993
graduate of Milligan College with a B.S. and M.Ed.
Robert taught Social Studies and was the Head Girls
Varsity basketball and Boys Varsity baseball coach
at Red Bird School. Robert was a summer crew
leader for the Red Bird Mission Work Camp for
2 yrs. also. Prior to coming to Red Bird, Robert was active in his home church, Shouns UMC, where he served as Lay Leader of the services and was alternate delegate to Annual Conference. Robert was a member of a mission team that went to Liberia, West Africa in 1995. He is a 2006 graduate of the Advanced Course of Study through Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, GA. Prior to his call to full-time ministry, Robert was a Lay speaker in both the Holston and Red Bird Conferences. Robert has attended the Walk to Emmaus. After meeting Shirley, Robert became an active part at the Joy Center, where he taught the High School Boys Sunday School class until time of his appointment. Robert was Co-Director of the Middle School age camp at Camp O’Cumberlands with Shirley. Robert is also the Head Softball Coach for Evarts High School, as well as a licensed official for Volleyball, Baseball, and Softball for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. Robert is also Adjunct Faculty at Southeast Community & Technical College (Harlan Campus), where he teaches Comparative Religion. Robert’s birthday is October 24.
Shirley is from Clay County in the Red Bird Missionary Conference. She graduated from Union College, a
UM College, with a B.S. in Psychology
and Sociology. Shirley taught elementary Christian
Education, was a Substitute Teacher, and Girls
Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach at Red Bird
School. Shirley was an active part of the Joy Center, one
of the Conference’s Outreach Centers, since it began in 1980. She was the Junior High Sunday School teacher up until Robert’s appointment. She has been a counselor at several of the Conference’s summer camps at Camp O’Cumberlands and was Co-Director of the Middle School age camp with Robert. Shirley is teaching Children's Sunday School class at Evarts Congregational UMC. Shirley is active in the UMW, president of the local Homemakers association. Shirley is working as a librarian at the local public library. Shirley’s birthday is April 12.
Robert and Shirley were married December 21, 1996 at the Joy Center. They have one son, Jordyn McKinlee, who was born in 2001. Jordyn is a wonder and a joy. He is attending school and loves his time there.
Robert and Shirley continue to experience the highs & lows that ministry brings and look forward to continue to serve God.
