About the church
The Booneville UMC was chartered prior to 1850 and is the oldest continuous congregation of any denomination in Owsley County. It became a part of the Red Bird Missionary Conference in 1974 when it requested to be transferred from the Kentucky Annual Conference.

Transforming lives...transforming communities...
Betty came to be a part of the Booneville United Methodist Church initially when her children began attending the Wednesday Bible Club, and later the Sunday morning church school and worship several years ago.

Betty married at age 14, and eventually gave birth to six children. Her oldest three were grown and gone by the time she started attending Booneville UMC, but she and the three youngest became very active in the life of the congregation. Eventually, she was baptized as an expression of her faith in Jesus Christ, and later three of her children were also baptized into Christ.

Although somewhat shy at first, Betty has grown in her faith to where she now sings solos in worship, helps to teach Sunday school and Bible club, and has shared her testimony on several occasions in public. She now serves a custodian at the church as well. When conditions in her home-life deteriorated drastically, she turned to the church for help. The Booneville UMC was able to get the family to a safe environment. After a month away, the church helped to secure housing for the family when they came back to Owsley County and surprised her with a 'household shower' to help furnish the apartment.

God's love and your love are expressed in many different ways in the mission churches and outreach centers of the Red Bird Missionary Conference. Often it is one person and one family at a time. Betty's story is just one example.
