About the church
In 1931, Bother Tuttle and Brother Root, pastors at Yancey Methodist Episcopal Church South, crossed the mountain into Mary Helen Coal Camp. In 1933, the church was charted and a house of worship was built. In the mid-forties, extensive renovations were completed on the church. A crash in the coal business came in the mid-1960's causing people to retire and to move away. In 1970, Mary Helen was the first church received into the Red Bird Missionary Conference from the Kentucky Conference.
