Bob & Elaine Landis - #773942

Rev. and Mrs. C. Robert Landis are United
Methodist Missionaries assigned to extended
ministries through the Eastern Pennsylvania
Conference and the General Board of Global
Ministries to the Red Bird Missionary
Conference, Beverly, Kentucky.  Rev. Landis is
the pastor of the Mary Helen church in Harlan
County.  Mrs Landis is a retired schoolteacher.

Bob came to the Red Bird Missionary Con-
ference in 1962 after completing his studies
at Lebanon
Valley College and United Theological
Seminary.  For 10 years he taught seventh and eighth grades in the Red
Bird Mission School.  In 1970, he was appointed to the Jack’s Creek Charge.  He is involved in many parts of the Red Bird Missionary Conference including the Conference Council on Ministry, the Board of Ordained Ministry, and the Conference Camping Committee.

Elaine came to the Red Bird area in 1957 as a Church of the Brethren Volunteer Service worker to help at the Flat Creek Church of the Brethren Mission, which was within 10 miles of Red Bird.  Following her year’s assignment, she returned to her home in Lancaster, PA and attended Millersville University.  Her dream was realized when she returned to Red Bird in 1963 to teach fifth and sixth grades in the Jack’s Creek School.  She retired in 1998 from the Harlan County School system having taught 23 years.  Tutoring children is now a weekly opportunity.  She is very involved in the Conference United Methodist Women and was one of four teachers sent out by Mary Helen UMC to start a new Sunday School at Cranks Creek, which has now developed into a church built in 1993.

Bob was appointed to the Mary Helen Church in Harlan County in May 1973 and the church has become a self-supported church (one of two in the Conference) through his ministry.  In 1993, his charge became a two-point charge with the addition of the Crank’s Creek Outreach Center.  He says, “I see my ministry as being one of bringing persons to understand the love of God in Jesus Christ, to nurture them in faith, and to reach out and help persons in all kinds of needs: material, physical, emotional and spiritual.”

Although Bob and Elaine both lived in Lancaster County, PA, they didn’t meet until they worked together at Jack’s Creek.  They were married in 1965 and have two adult boys and one adult girl.
